The necromancer’s cries shriek across the forest as you see more skeletal hands try to reach for a stolen ruby your rogue is carrying.

“After them!”

You charge with the rest of your party, thundering through the mountain pass until you see it in the distance, a wooden bridge swaying over an endless chasm.

As your party races across the bridge, your steps pause as you realize that the skeletons and zombies are going to be here quicker than you all can make it across the bridge. The bridge won’t allow everyone to cross, and that’s what makes it the perfect choke point. You turn, and as you plant your feet firmly in the rotting wood, the swift metal unsheathing of your sword and shield echoes out for everyone to hear.

You will not fall.

You will not falter.

You will hold the line.

  ----

The original mythos of the Fighter is etched in steel and scar, born not of magical mysticism but of mortal mastery and training. Their legend strides through the blood-soaked fields of ancient warbands, where champions rose not by fate, but by relentless discipline. They are the heirs of Achilles, Lancelot and Sir Gawain, molded by those who honed their bodies into weapons and their minds into battlegrounds.

Fighters do not beg the gods for power; they earn it with every swing, every block, every breath held in the face of death. They are tacticians and duelists, guardians and conquerors. Some fight for honor, some for vengeance, some simply because the blade is the only truth they’ve ever known. Their strength is not in spells or divine favor, but in the unyielding will to stand when others fall.

The flavor and description in the 2014 Player’s Handbook significantly fleshed out each class, and although I personally recommend using those descriptions to further help emotionally deepening your class (if you wish), here are a few questions to consider when building your Fighter:

Mythic Fighter Questions

  • What battle defined your legend—or left you broken?

  • Who trained you, and do you still follow their teachings?

  • Is your armor your burden… or your freedom?

Modular Fighter Questions

  • Are you a tactician, a weapon master, or a survivor?

  • What’s more important to you: efficiency or honor?

  • What do you fight for when no one is watching?

Behind the Screen

  • Combat Economy is Your Core Currency

Action Surge is your tempo-breaker—save it for high-value turns (advantage, crit-fishing, or controlling terrain). Think of yourself as pacing the fight.

  • Positioning > Power

You don't have spells, but you do control space. Opportunity attacks, reach weapons, sentinel builds, or battlefield choke points let you shape enemy behavior.

  • Subclass as Tactical Philosophy

    • Champion: Maximize crit frequency—pair with high-roll, low-risk damage (e.g., Great Weapon Master + advantage engines).

    • Battle Master: Pre-scripted control—your maneuvers are like having scrolls strapped to your blade.

    • Eldritch Knight: Use cantrips for utility (like Booming Blade) and spells for control, not just damage.

  • Short Rest Synergy

Coordinate with casters—Fighters recharge on short rests, while spellcasters often play the long game. The right pacing lets you both stay lethal.

----

  • Let Fighters Feel Powerful Early

Give them opportunities to shine through clever tactics or endurance—not just flashy damage. Arena duels, battlefield control, or NPCs who respect military rank go a long way.

  • Let Their Subclass Shape Challenges

A Battle Master might want foes with predictable patterns; an Eldritch Knight thrives where arcane puzzles meet melee. Consider tailoring one encounter per arc to emphasize what makes them different, not just “hit harder.”

  • Reward Non-Spell Creativity

Fighters don’t get spells—but they do get narrative leverage. A DM who says “sure, describe how you disarm the noble’s guard with a boot knife” turns a toolbox Fighter into a cinematic tactician.

  • Spotlight Their Physical Mastery

Fighters are the embodiment of peak physical training—so let that shine beyond combat. Give them moments where brute strength, precise agility, or sheer stamina solve problems others can’t. Let them scale the crumbling cliff while others falter, hold a collapsing gate long enough for allies to escape, or perform a daring leap across rooftops in pursuit of a fleeing spy. These feats remind everyone that Fighters aren’t just warriors—they’re legends in motion. If you found this helpful, check out the Dungeon Dudes Class Guide for the Fighter for both 2014 and 2024. It was a huge help in learning more about the class!
